Competition Specifications

THE SITE

The site is an approximately 60 acre plus parcel located in Visitacion Valley on the San Francisco
Peninsula. Just to the west of the 101 freeway, it is bounded by Bayshore Boulevard on the west and
Tunnel Avenue to the east. The site actually straddles San Francisco and San Mateo Counties.
Landmarks in the neighborhood include Candlestick Park on the shores of the Bay to the northeast
and the Cow Palace to the west. This area is rich in potential. It is surrounded by a broad variety
of residential, commercial and industrial uses. Only a short distance from both downtown San Francisco
and the high tech environment of Silicon Valley there are an abundance of resources available for creative development.

CRITERIA

Definitions of “sustainable design” vary and are subject to interpretation. To help clarify the most
important principles, the AIA Committee on the Environment has developed its “Top Ten measures for
sustainable design,” which entrants may use as a loose guideline: “Great design includes environmental,
technical, and aesthetic excellence. Stewardship, performance, and inspiration are essential and
inseparable.” (See the AIA Top Ten Green Project Metrics at http://aiatopten.org.)

COMPETITION AWARDS & PUBLICITY

There are $10,000 worth of awards available distributed to the top two winners ($2,500 each) and the top
winner also designates a $5,000 prize to be awarded to an accredited architectural school in California in
their name. Awards will be distributed in conjunction with the Monterey Design Conference.
All entries will be featured on the competition website and the top 25% will be included in an exhibit at the
Monterey Design Conference as well as the top 10% in a special competition publication distributed to
over 15,000 architects, contractors, educators, and public officials.
